Back into some kind of routine and having ambitions for things. One of them, the impetus created by reading Peter Hessler's "River Town": to buy a Kindle when I'm in the US in Oct. for my brother's wedding. I will become better-read about China; place myself in a textual field-tradition of foreigners writing-living in China and forge my own place. Not sure where this need springs from or how to explain it's significance; how it was part of getting me out of a depression.
My mind is rusty on the words; finding which it needs and deploying them without fumbling. Studying Chinese characters gives me some sense of direction and purpose when I don't know/want what else to do. Maybe it's the easily quantifiable, gradual sense of progression. Maybe it's also the feeling of touching a very old thing elusive in meaning, yet highly material, concrete in form.

ReplyDeleteSend some words this way.
Wes, I was thinking of some of the English that you see around China - it it's unusual Chinese form - and thought some pictures of those things might be a good start to some "Found Poetry".
ReplyDeleteOh, and speaking of people trying to speak English, Dad was glad we have a "PMS" to get directions to the restaurant in Chicago where we are meeting Todd.
